Biography

Born in North Wales, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Arthur Reckless and Rudolf Piernay. His repertory ranges from Mozart to Sondheim and his performances from intimate recitals to the opening ceremony of the Wales Millennium Centre and the BBC Last Night of the Proms. His award-winning discography encompasses operas by Mozart, Wagner and Strauss and more than 15 solo discs including Lieder, American musical theatre, Welsh songs and sacred repertory. He was made a CBE in 2003, was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2006, received a knighthood in 2017 and was honoured with the title of Austrian Kammersänger by the Vienna State Opera in 2022. 

Recent appearances have included Balstrode and the Dutchman (Vienna State Opera), Sir John Falstaff (Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, Grange Park Opera), Scarpia (Bucharest National Opera, Munich) and concerts in Künzelsau, Tokyo, Monte Carlo and Toronto, as well as a live international stream from Brecon Cathedral, Wales, for the Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Met Stars Live in Concert’ series. Plans include Sir John Falstaff (Zürich Opera) and the Dutchman (Grange Park Opera).
